About the Role

The GM, Product & Intelligence leads the proactive management of business unit and regional commercial performance and is the primary interface between those business units and regions, and the customer account managers and the broader Commercial team. The GM, Product & Intelligence leads in developing, coordinating and communicating all product and customer intelligence activities as well as actively participating in strategic planning throughout the business, ensuring alignment and effective support for our commercial strategies.

The ultimate responsibility is to help align our commercial priorities and corporate strategies with our product capabilities, providing analytical and commercial support to corporate, regional and business unit heads in the delivery of these corporate goals and driving overall business performance. A significant part of this is leading commercial efforts of immediate high strategic importance to the corporation and its business units, and communicating major findings and business implications to help the company make fact-based, customer-driven decisions that will positively impact the business and the brand.

The GM, Product & Intelligence will require a good understanding of, and lead on, our Product, support our interface with our global customer base and help develop overall commercial strategies and objectives. 

  • Lead consulting engagements on the top commercial issues facing individual business units and the overall company. Effectively manage projects from start to finish, including developing and presenting recommendations to the Executive Management team or relevant Chief Officers. This may require, at the GMs discretion and lead, the positioning of members of the team to particular Hot Spots, for a period of time, representing HO Commercial Product position, and link to global liner relationships.
  • Lead the product & intelligence team that designs, develops, analyses and communicates customer intelligence, to support all DP World business areas’ interactions and interface with our core Liner Customers
  • Lead the continued development and adoption of our Standard Contract Template and proactively engage with our core Liner Customers to agree acceptable Global Contracts.
  • Monitor monthly performance across the portfolio – covering commercial and operational metrics to highlight emerging Hot Spots or potential issues and proactively lead remedial/recovery projects in coordination with Global Operations.
  • Lead the product & intelligence team in proactively developing and interpreting trade analytics projects globally - to support all DP World business areas’ strategic and tactical positioning.
  • Lead the product & intelligence team that develops, analyses and communicates product intelligence by business unit, understanding our competitive position, strengths and weaknesses to support Commercial strategic and tactical business decisions.
  • Participate in the global reforecasting process, including proactive dialogue with the Commercial team and Regions
  • For each project, provide strategic oversight and product & intelligence expertise, including:
  • Consult with internal, cross-functional clients to understand their strategic and/or tactical business challenges for which research is required. Assist in proper definition and evaluation of problems requiring strategic solutions
  • Advise, manage and influence internal clients on the most appropriate approach to address their challenge. Requires integrating knowledge of business issues with expertise in research methodologies and best practices. Must develop and maintain a comprehensive and current understanding of relevant industry practices and issues and ensure that this understanding is effectively utilised to deliver optimal insights throughout the organisation.
  • Develop project approach and plan and then execute all stages of each research project using proper methodologies.
  • Analyse and synthesize data and present results integrated with appropriate business insight/context in writing and orally to clients, including Chief Officers, in a timely manner. Provide actionable recommendations that are strategic and business-focused.
  • Maintain and improve ongoing research programs and studies.
  • Oversee and manage outside vendors/suppliers. Identify and engage research vendors to create comprehensive research proposals including, but not limited to scope, design, cost and timeline information.
  • Plan, track and manage project budget processes to maintain cost and quality.
  • Effectively manage the portfolio of all research projects, including secondary research, product & intelligence and strategic studies.
  • Coordinate and consult with Senior Management across the company on strategic projects as well as creating an awareness and understanding of research capabilities available to them. This includes supporting the regional and functional management teams with interpretation and implementation of Head Office strategies and providing regular feedback to Head Office regarding progress and results.
  • Own corporate library function for secondary research purposes, both for proactively distributing key-issue research and responding to customised research requests. Identify and assess new sources of actionable competitive intelligence.
  • Manage, develop and mentor professional staff to optimise performance and to ensure development of necessary skills and capabilities for the future
  • Delegate work and provide project supervision
  • Provide expert counsel on research methodologies as well as business knowledge context and strategic perspective
  • Responsible for the management and leadership of an engaged team, promoting collaboration and ensuring that each is developed and evaluated against goals and objectives which are aligned, specific, measurable, attainable yet challenging, realistic and time bound.
  • Act as an ambassador for DP World at all times when working; promoting and demonstrating positive behaviours in harmony with DP World’s Founder’s Principles, values and culture; ensuring the highest level of safety is applied in all activities; understanding and following DP World’s Code of Conduct and Ethics policies
  • Perform other related duties as assigned 
Qualifications & Experience

In order to give credible support to the organisation and be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have the following:


Solid tertiary qualifications (concentration in market research, economics or analytically-oriented discipline) with a strong preference for an MBA degree from a top school.


10+ years experience in the shipping and/or container-terminal industry, with a strong exposure to strategic planning and at least 3 years in a senior role.

3+ years managing and directing employees


In-depth and thorough knowledge of competitive intelligence and relevant basic and advanced analytical/statistical methodologies for primary and secondary research.

Quick study, with demonstrated superior strategic, critical and analytical thinking skills.

Top-class consultative skills. Experience in dealing with non-technical associates to draw out and understand their business challenges and then integrate this learning with research expertise.

Strong team management skills and demonstrated ability to lead cross-functional teams

Superior influencing and interpersonal skills with the ability to interface effectively at all levels of seniority.

Exceptional oral and written communication skills. Experience in presenting results of complex analyses clearly to clients, including Senior Management.

Ability to multi-task effectively and deal with conflicting deadlines.
