About the Role

To develop, lead and assist in the implementation of DP World’s standards in the management of Operations and Engineering, in line with DP World’s business strategies. 

The SVP Global Operations & Engineering collaborates with Senior and Executive Management to ensure overall value is realised and optimised across the organisation.

The job holder leads a range of corporate functions and business within the International Ports & Terminals Division. The focus is a combination of setting standards, monitoring and audit as well as building regional relationships and direct intervention at BU level. Global Operations & Engineering is clearly seen as the Company’s expertise group and as such, in addition to direct business advice also provides support to all other corporate functions, particularly Planning and Project Management, Procurement, Business Development and IT. Though the sub-functions controlled are banded under an Operations banner they are disparate by nature and include overseeing the WCS business. It plays a strong global data gathering and analysis role across all its areas with a focus on the facilitation of error reductions, cost savings, productivity gains, and asset management/ protection.

Key Accountabilities
  • Develop, direct and implement Company’s operational and engineering strategic direction in line with the Asset Management strategy. Ensure implementation of processes and procedures that are cost efficient and with due regard for safety, quality and productivity, over the entire portfolio of terminals. Promote process and equipment automation initiatives. Ensure the best practices and latest technologies are anchored and represented in the design of greenfield facilities
  • Advise and direct Senior Management/Regional Management/Business Units in the minimum standards required to meet International and Regional security standards and processes in order to move cargo throughout our facilities unimpeded by regulatory compliance.     
  • Propose and gain agreement to annual business plans and budgets and implement, taking corrective actions where necessary, in line with meeting global operational strategies within cost and on schedule.
  • Direct and lead the Global Engineering team through to Business Unit Engineering teams, focusing on asset integrity, cost management and technical advice, setting and monitoring standards in line with the agreed plan and business needs
  • Direct and lead the Global Operations team, focusing on process optimization, terminal design, automation technology and their applications as well as setting standards, gathering and analyzing data, in line with the agreed plan and business needs. Assist in the development of operational Systems and Applications ensuring system optimization and implementation of all functionality.
  • Perform operational and engineering reviews of capital acquisitions for new projects and existing Business Units including layout with traffic plans and in-depth modeling of terminal capacity, equipment and labor requirement.
  • Provide operational and engineering input to the new conceptual design of new port facilities and port expansion projects including the use of simulation models and various business models
  • Manage World Crane Services ensuring it is effectively structured, resourced, and controlled to meet cost and margin targets.
  • Oversee the efficient and effective integration of Sustainability practices within the global operational and engineering functions, to deliver Sustainability targets in line with the agreed plans
  • Recruit, motivate and develop the team ensuring optimum structure and resources necessary to deliver functional plans in the short, medium and long term
  • Provide expert support to the COO IP&T and Top management team, within the functions, areas of expertise, to facilitate effective decision taking on business critical issues/initiatives.
  • Support corporate functions in management of their objectives and responsibilities.
  • In collaboration with the Chief Technology Officer, identify and communicate the Best Practice technologies and processes within the company and Industry to enhance the performance of the Business Units.
  • Accountable for leading an engaged team, providing direction and promoting collaboration while ensuring they are enabled to carry out the goals and objectives of the business

Qualifications & Experience

In order to give credible support to the organisation and be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have the following:

  • Experience in managing the business.
    • 15 years’ experience in global container/non-container terminal industry with a keen interest in business practices and process improvement.
    • Business leader has proven track record of change management.
  • Project Management
    • Strong negotiation and relationship management skills. Ability to lead cross functional teams enabling positive team dynamics, effective performance management and engagement
    • Ability to work with program / project managers and teams from other areas.
    • Previous project management experience within the container / non-container terminal industry.
    • Ability to generate respect and trust from staff and external constituencies

     

  • Subject knowledge
    • Must know all terminal processes
    • The desire to learn and take on board business related matters regarding business practices and assessments.
    • Knowledge of Safety, Environmental and Security related matters and how they relate to terminal operations and company commitments.
    • An ability to maintain current knowledge of developments related to business matters of interest to internal assessment particularly legislation changes and developments as they affect DP World operations.
