About the Role

The position is responsible for Health, Safety, Environment and Quality performance of P&O Maritime’s Ireland and UK Business Units, through active interaction with the workforce and thereby creating a genuine HSEQ culture throughout the workplace. The position is also responsible for managing the HSEQ Management System and for ensuring compliance with the requirements of the system. The position is also required is also to act as the Designated Person ashore (DPA) and Deputy Company Security Officer (DCSO).

 The role also has responsibility for leading operational activity on the Prince Madog.

The primary location is in Galway, Ireland reporting directly to the General Manager of P&O Maritime Ireland. As the role covers both Ireland and UK, travel activity is required from time to time.
Key Responsibilities are but not limited to
  • Review Safety Management System as appropriate

  • Take corrective action to remedy safety hazards or risks and restore a safe working environment

  • Maintain all files and records in an up to date and accurate manner to improve the efficiency of day to day activities and compliance with statutory and quality standards

  • Provide HSEQ input to weekly and monthly reports, as directed by GM. 

  • Communicate health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure all staff understands current policy and practice requirements.

  • Take appropriate action to respond to issues identified from Vessel Safety Meeting minutes

  • Monitor ongoing compliance with ISM, ISPS and MLC as appropriate

  • Develop and ensure completion of internal and external auditing, in accordance with Company and statutory requirements.
  • Monitor compliance with P&OML HSSEQ Policies and Standards including but not limited to: 

    • Emergency Response and Business Continuity Plans

    • Risk Management

    • Control of Work processes (CoW), including:

      • Permit to Work

      • Lock out / Tag out

    • Proactive initiatives, including:

      • Take 5 process

      • Stop Work Authority

    • Safety Observation Card System

Qualifications and Experience
  • STCW Chief Officer certification or tertiary HSE qualification to Diploma/Degree level (NEBOSH international Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or equivalent)
  • Minimum 5 years experience in a similar position and ideally have marine operations industry experience.

  • Experience as the Designated Person ashore (DPA) and Company Security Officer(CSO

  • Certified Lead/Internal Auditor in ISM, ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001

  • Experience in leading critical incident investigations

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant software applications
