What are your main responsibilities?
As a marine pilot, my job is to make sure all vessels serving Jebel Ali enter and exit the port safely. This involves plotting the course of every vessel beforehand, and being in constant communication with its captain and crew. I must be aware of current and future weather conditions, tides, size and weight of the carrier as well as load, for whether the vessel is containerised or general cargo, an oil tanker, an automobile carrier or aircraft carrier determines how many tugs are required. The job of pilot is physically demanding. At all times I must be aware of my environment, and proper safety procedure.
What do you enjoy most about your work?
The job of a pilot is a mix of art and science. I enjoy the heavy responsibility that comes with the job, and the feeling that comes from knowing I am playing a key role in the functioning of the port.
