Purpose of Role

Reporting to Automation Manager and the main purpose of this position is to ensure efficient, reliable and safe operation and maintenance of Automatic stacking cranes and related systems.

Ensuring timely, effective and safe maintenance of Automatic Stacking cranes while considering the operational requirement and statuary obligations. Managing all automation software and hardware related to Drives, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) and control systems installed on Automatic Stacking Cranes (ASCs)

Although the focus of this position is the Automatic Stacking Cranes it might also be required to look at the control systems of Quay cranes and straddle carriers from time to time.


Key Objectives and Responsibilities

Key Objectives:

To continually monitor the performance of ASCs in order to find/propose ways of continuous improvement.

Optimise the performance of ASCs considering operational patterns, business demands and industry developments.

Develop full understanding of troubleshooting Automatic Stacking cranes.

Play an active role in the delivery and commissioning of new ASCs.

Assist in the procurement planning of spares considering maintenance schedules, consumption trends and lead times


Key responsibilities:

  • Develop understanding of all automation software in order to troubleshoot PLCs, Drives and other control systems installed on Automatic Stacking Cranes

  • Troubleshoot control systems from a hardware perspective

  • Manage version control, passwords level and back up of software

  • Develop skills to upgrade different automation software installed on ASCs

  • Manage proper documentation control for software updates, changes and backups

  • Optimise the performance of Cranes by working closely with the suppliers and end users

  • Provide necessary training to technicians/team leaders with respect to automation and troubleshooting

  • Assist the team in the implementation of H&S policies and procedures in the maintenance organization.

  • Actively participate in the maintenance of ASCs

  • Provide on-site guidance and support to Team Leaders and ensure daily compliance with H&S legislation and company procedures.

  • Assist in the development and implementation of new projects to improve equipment monitoring and reliability

  • To ensure that RAMS for all the maintenance activities are documented and implemented.

  • Provide necessary support to develop/fine tune method statements and risk assessments.

The above outlined responsibilities are not exhaustive and you may be required to carry out other tasks that are appropriate to your role in addition to these.

Knowledge and skills  


  • Demonstrable engineering/maintenance experience preferably in an factory environment with some automation or Programmable Controller based (PLC) based control systems.

  • Excellent communication and personal skills.

  • Excellent knowledge of Programmable Logic Controllers, AC drives and control systems. Siemens PLC programming skills are not mandatory but preferred.

  • Experience and knowledge of HSE practices/regulations related to equipment maintenance and activities.




National Qualifications Framework – Level 3 or higher or a University Degree in electrical or electronics engineering.
