Purpose of the Role

The purpose of this role is to lead the strategic financial management of “DPW UK” (defined as  comprising London Gateway Port, London Gateway Logistics Park, DPW Southampton, CNS and any subsequent new DP World businesses in UK). 

Implementing the appropriate financial controls and reporting structures required for the differing requirements of the £1.5bn Terminals & CNS business  and  Park project.



Key Objectives and Responsibilities
 The key objectives are:
  • Strategically lead, drive, oversee and manage all aspects of financial performance; accounting & financial reporting; and lead effective Legal, Assurance, HR, Procurement and Insurance functions for DPW UK;


  • Alongside DPW UK CEO and DPW UK COO, to set/agree targets, KPIs, budgets and motivate and hold accountable Budget holders within the DPW UK business units;


  • Identify scope for efficiencies and synergies across the Functions of DPW UK, particularly in the areas under the CFO function;


  • Work closely with DPW UK CEO and DPW UK COO (3 person core DPW UK senior team) to lead the Functional set-up and maximize the results of DP World UK through benchmarking and strategic review/development. Will include participation in the UK Exco;


  • Be an executive board member of all DPW UK constituent company boards.

Executive team Responsibilities

  • To be a principal member of the DPW UK Executive Team, notably ensuring financial discipline and adherence to financial targets;
  • Alongside CEO and CFO and Head of HR UK, drive performance culture and leadership within DPW UK; 
  • Undertake projects as required by the Executive team;


Business and Financial Strategy (including Procurement & Insurance)

  •  Direct the implementation of financial, HR and legal strategies ensuring these strategies supports critical business requirements for the DPW UK companies;
  • Develop and lead the efficient and effective financial, legal, HR, procurement processes, policies and systems to support the development and operation of DPW-UK; 
  • Continually improve the financial monitoring and business control environment (i.e. procurement function, financial discipline, strategic direction, stakeholder management and communication) in DPW UK; 
  • Establish and implement short and long term departmental goals, objectives, policies and operating procedures; 
  • Oversee / lead with the relationship with LG’s external lenders (£650m facility) and LG lenders’ advisers for DPWLG Port and, ultimately obtain & manage DPWLG Park financing when external financing is raised. Oversee funding requirements for DPW Southampton; 
  • Understand and manage the different financial reporting and monitoring demands needed to ensure appropriate oversight and governance of the DPW UK businesses, recognising the different structures, business composition and ongoing development nature of DPWLG Park;


Accounting Responsibilities

  •  Prime responsibility for long term budgetary planning and cost management in line with the respective, separate strategic and business plans for DPW UK; 
  • Oversee and manage budgeting and the adherence to / implementation of DPW UK businesses so as to monitor progress and present financial metrics both internally and externally;


People Management

  •  Direct and drive performance management culture within the team ensuring that staff meet their targets in line with the business needs; 

  • Lead, manage and motivate team in line HR policies and procedures to ensure they deliver services in line with expectations; 
  • Coach the team to improve their skills and knowledge and help them work efficiently and effectively Select and assign staff, ensuring equal employment opportunities in recruitment, training and promotions;


Legal & Assurance

  •  Oversee the legal, assurance, environmental & sustainability strategy for the DPW UK and seek to maximise efficiency and impact in these areas; 

  • Drive the DPW UK environmental & sustainability credentials and agenda;
  • Contribute to the continuous business improvement process and to the meeting of business objectives; 
  • To be an ambassador for the company at all times internally and externally; 
  • Comply with Fatal Risk Standards, Health & Safety Policy and safe working practices, ensure responsibility for safety and discipline in work area and report accidents and ‘near misses’ in accordance with defined safety procedures.

Knowledge and Skills
  • Ability to produce detailed financial and economic projections which can be used to support internal analysis and negotiations with provider of external finance;

  • Ability to deal effectively with the variety of complex issues arising from the implementation of a major construction project;

  • Work with other functions in the establishment and development of control systems;

  • Deliver accurate analysis within tight deadlines;

  • Work effectively with other people to achieve individual, team and corporate goals.  This is done by managing and motivating a team towards the achievement of team and corporate goals;

  • Ability to focus on identifying and meeting customers’ needs, building long term trusting relationships and partnering to mutual benefit.  This encompasses both internal and external customers and develop long term partnerships with them;

  • To have the energy and determination to increase London Gateway’s capability to deliver and improve business results by maximising resources to achieve individual and team objectives;

  • Knowledge of IFRS;

  • Understanding of business valuation and decision making;

  • Very well developed legal knowledge.


Education and Qualifications
  • Business degree or equivalent e.g. MBA;

  • Master's degree in accounting or business administration;

  • Recognised financial qualification (ACA, CIMA etc.).

Other Information
  • A progressive finance career path of which a significant part must have been at senior management level in a large organisation;

  • Senior level experience of managing financial operations within the private sector for a large division;

  • Senior level experience of corporate governance;

  • Legal experience especially contract law would be helpful;

  • Comprehensive experience in business analysis and development;

  • Understanding and experience of stevedoring and container businesses;

  • Detailed knowledge of engineering, legal and environmental issues arising from port construction in the UK; and

  • Experience in interpreting a strategic vision.
