Purpose of the Role


The Civil Engineer role is to assist the Senior Engineering Manager in the delivery of all maritime and port works including directing and advising our maritime works consultants and contractors to ensure designs are optimised for value for London Gateway.


Key Objectives and Responsibilities

The key objectives are to ensure designs and construction of maritime and port works are completed on time and do not exceed budget.

Key objectives:

  • Assist in managing consultants involved in design of maritime and port works
  • Assist in procurement of the required statutory marine consents, monitoring compliance with the conditions and liaising with regulators to achieve final regulatory acceptance
  • Assist in the preparation of employer’s requirement, specifications and other tender documents for procurement of maritime and port works
  • Manage contractors undertaking ground and site investigation works required for maritime and port works
  • Pro-actively managing London Gateway’s independent checking and supervising engineers for the maritime and port works
  • Ensure integration of all disciplines involved in the design and construction of maritime and port works
  • Co-ordinate on site construction activities with operational port requirements
  • Providing specialist advice on acceptable practices and details to the designers
  • Monitoring project budgets and claims and flag and escalate problems as necessary
  • Working within project budgets and managing claims and any resultant variations to minimise the costs commensurate with achieving the planned objectives
  • Ensuring work packages are completed on time or, should delays occur, all reasonable actions are taken to minimise the effect of such delays
  • Implementation requires integration of limited specified resources and procedures;
  • Some flexibility to modify the established sequence of work
  • There is a requirement to understand basic functional procedures to a level of sufficiency;
  • Supervision more frequent and work monitored for progress and results;
  • Monitoring and Reporting.
  • Stakeholder and consultant liaison/advice.  


Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Will be able to demonstrate experience which includes both the detailed design and supervision of container terminals and port works.

Experience at Senior Civil Engineer level of an engineering consultancy would be highly regarded.

  • A sound working knowledge of AutoCAD;
  • Strong analytical skills and confident in handling and interpreting numerical data and information;
  • Good report writing skills;
  • Ability to collate and disseminate facts ensuring that the audience understands information being presented supported by high presentation proficiency to present the project in a variety of forums to different levels of business;
  • Confident communicator both face to face and in writing with all levels;
  • Advanced level knowledge of Microsoft Word and PowerPoint packages to competently use computer software to create documents, spreadsheets and presentations;
  • Willingness to learn new skills and knowledge.


Education and Qualifications

The successful candidate will have a degree or higher degree in Civil Engineering.
