Job Purpose

Position: Engineering Manager, DP World Berbera, based in Somaliland.  

This position reports to the Terminal COO and the main purpose of the role is to be responsible for the consistent high level of availability and reliability of all Heavy, Mobile Equipment and Infrastructure Equipment.

Key Accountabilities
  • Managerial:

    • Ensure adherence to safety and discipline in Technical department.
    • Promote the DP World bench marks, local bench marks and the terminal productivity by understanding current practices, identifying weak points/process and setting up improvement plans.
    • Attend weekly review meetings with the terminal management to present technical department performance and required support when needed.
    • Prepare the strategic plan for the engineering department short and long term in line with the head office and regional objectives.
    • Manage the department’s financial, administrative, and personnel activities
    • Perform the required reviews for his subordinates and ensure this is done as per the DPW Human Capital Guidelines for all levels.
    • Ownership and commitment for closing all Audit points without delays.
    • Develop, implement and enforce technical department’s policies, procedures, and guidelines in coordination with the DPW Regional and head office.
    • Any other work deemed fit for structuring of tasks and goals, to achieve high productivity with efficient utilisation of equipment and labour.



    • Act as the key internal and external focal point for the company’s technical activities
    • Liaise with equipment, spares & parts vendors on a regular basis.
    • Set out regular guidelines to Purchase & Stores for optimal inventory management
    • Prepare and manage annual budget for technical & material stores department.
    • Maintain and enhance relationships and goodwill with departments, equipment & material (spares, etc.) vendors, maintenance contractors
    • Implement and monitor training and safety programs for the staff in line with the DPW regional and Global Safety Guidelines.



    • Ensure the performance of periodical scheduled maintenance plan as per the OEM, DPW and agreed industry standards.
    • Ensure best quality equipment, spares and parts are utilized at best available price
    • Monitor Performance KPIs and implement Best Practices for Technical as per DPW Guidelines.
    • Identify and develop the department’s technology and training requirements
    • Provide regular process control checks and initiate and support performance improvement activities.
    • Drive the innovation spirit within the department to better serve the operations and the terminal annual objectives.
    • Keep track of latest developments in equipment technology.


In order to give credible support to the organisation and be successful in this role, the ideal candidate will have the following experience and skills :

  • 7 years of relevant experience in managerial position.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience within container terminal operations with a keen interest in best business practices and process improvement.
  • Detailed knowledge of Port & ICD Equipment.
  • In depth knowledge of container terminals organisation, engineering, resource planning, procedures, business processes, budgeting and related financial controls.
  • Knowledge of Safety, Environmental and Security and how they relate to terminal.
  • Analytical thinking towards successful process continuous improvement and procedures.
  • LEAN six sigma knowledge.
  • Project Management skills.
  • Financially oriented with ability to understand and handle the Engineering Cost and budget
  • Preferably M.Sc in Engineering or Bachelor in Mechanical or Electrical.

Presentation and communication skills

  • Excellent presentation skills, can persuade people and explain complex matters with ease.
  • Ability to communicate in multicultural environment from blue collars to executive management.
  • Strong relationship management skills, ability to convince people.
  • Ability to deliver staff training when required.
  • Capable and hands on to swiftly build or analyse large Excel files and financial models.
  • Capable of writing well-structured reports and business models.
